Activities

For many visitors a day or two doing nothing is a wonderful tonic - the peace of our countryside can be so relaxing. The more intrepid visitor though will enjoy one of the magnificent walks of approximately 3 hours through the indigenous forest followed by a dip in the pool. For the birder the area around Lythwood is a real treat; it offers three different habitats and to date 160 plus species have been seen (or heard) including the very rare Cape Parrot and the Martial Eagle. And if you want to catch a trout for your breakfast then there is always the opportunity to cast a fly on either the dam or the river.

Close to Lythwood are the many craft shops of the Midlands Meander including the internationally known Ardmore Pottery and visitors looking for a present for themselves or loved ones will enjoy spending some time visiting some of these establishments.

The overseas visitor may also like to experience the lifestyle of the local township of Mpophomeni. Either half day or full day tours can be arranged at a very nominal cost. The visitor will be offered the chance to participate in the dancing and drumming - a lot of fun.

Overseas visitors staying two nights or more may enjoy one of our specialised tours:
Day trip to Game Pass Shelter.
This is a unique African cultural tour during which the visitor will see some of the best examples of Bushmen art in the world and will learn about the connection between the San people and the Zulu people of today.
(Cost from R2 250 for 1-4 pax)

Tour of one of the Anglo Boer war battlefields
The Battle of the Willow Grange. It takes less than five hours and the visitor will walk over some spectacular countryside. The significance of the battle is that it represented the furtherest point south reached by the Boer.
(Cost R1 400 for 1-4 pax)

Guided tour into Lesotho up Sani Pass
This is a full day tour and the views on a clear day are magnificent. The last stop on this tour is a visit to the highest pub in Africa!
(Cost from R2 250 for 1-4 pax)

 A Horse Whispering Experience
R300 per participant
A romantic and unique way to propose to your loved one.

Hot Air Ballooning
Flying high above the Natal Midlands, with a landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. What better way to spend a day with a partner. A romantic adventure that will remain in your heart and memory forever. Whether to propose marriage or just fulfill your need for excitement and adventure, a hot air balloon ride from Lythwood Lodge is the perfect way to meet this requirement.

Note: weather permitting.

Lythwood is blessed with some excellent golf courses within a short motoring distance of the lodge. See under surroundings for further details.

Should the weather be inclement guests can browse among the books in the library, participate in a 1000 piece puzzle or alternatively play a game of bridge, chess or backgammon or something perhaps more mundane like Cluedo - the choice is varied and it is yours.
