THE GIANT'S CUP TEA GARDEN AND RESTAURANT
Family Restaurant on the Sani Pass, Himeville, KwaZulu-Natal
The Giant’s Cup Tea Garden, restaurant and craft shop is situated 10.5km along the Sani Pass Road in the Southern Drakensberg. It is aptly named after the view of the Giant’s Cup peaks, seen from the wooden deck verandah, whilst enjoying refreshments in the open mountain air. The building was once the base of Mokhotlong Mountain Transport, which pioneered passenger and freight transport up Sani Pass in the late 50’s. There is a fascinating display of photographs from the early days in the restaurant, courtesy of Mary Alexander. Now with a cosy interior and cypress flooring, the tea garden is the ideal stopover on one’s way up or down the Sani Pass or for a fun family outing.
Whilst parents enjoy the magnificent views, children can play in the playground and feed the rabbits and guinea pigs. The 2.5km Nature Trail offers the opportunity to stretch one’s legs and has a useful little booklet explaining points of interest en route.
Hearty breakfasts (traditional or health buffet) are served from 7.30am. Light lunches ranging from toasted sandwiches or filled pancakes to cheese or trout platters is served between noon and 2pm whilst homemade cakes and other teatime treats are available all day. Our milk and cream is sourced from our own Jersey cows and children may watch them being milked at 4pm. A three course Sunday roast luncheon is available for which advance booking is essential. Children’s menus are designed for little tums.
A wide range of teas, cappuccinos and filter coffee, milkshakes and soft drinks will quench one’s thirst.
