The Southern sector of the Kruger National Park is part of the original Sabie Game reserve that was proclaimed a Wildlife Reserve in 1898 by the president at the time Paul Kruger. The wildlife is very prolific. The hippo pool with nearby Bushmen paintings is a must for all visitors and is just across the Crocodile River where Njovu Kruger Game Lodge is situated on the opposite side. The majestic Seringa, Marula, tamboti and Wild Olive trees can be seen all over this region White Rhino, Wild Dog and Leopard are common to this area. The Acacia trees provide shelter and food to Giraffe and Elephant, while the Crocodile River provides late afternoon / evening viewing of Elephants, Waterbuck, Impala and the elusive predators while they drink from the river.
Summer temperatures can exceed 40 degrees C but winters are generally very mild.
The best time to visit the Greater Kruger National Park: Both seasons have different advantages eg: From October to March, when the summer rains have transformed the dry African savannah into a paradise with flowers blossoming everywhere, the park is alive with young antelope and migratory birds. In the winter months the water is scarce and the animals are easier to spot, especially at all of the water holes and riverbeds. Winter is the most popular season out of the two.
